Number Of Openings Known

Is it better to know a vast number of openings or just maybe three (03) for White and three (03) for Black. I am of trying to just get good at three each. Wasn't it Bruce Lee who said
"I fear not the man who has practiced ten thousand kicks once, I fear the man who has practiced one kick ten thousand tmes." What is the general opinion from the more learned players than myself ?

At your rating, learning the first five moves of three openings for white and three for black should give you a good start on your games.

At your level I'd say learn and follow general opening principles, such as those listed here: http://exeterchessclub.org.uk/content/ten-rules-opening. You could also try reading Logical Chess: Move by Move, which will teach you about more than just opening principles.

In my opinion, it's good to learn the basic ideas of a lot of openings and experiment after learning the general principles. I personally only played one opening as White, had one reply against 1. e4, and had one reply against 1. d4, but would change my repertoire every so often so as to learn new openings.

Now that I've reached Expert level (where my opponents will crush me if I mess up in the opening too much ) I just play 1. c4 as White and as Black play the Caro-Kann (against 1. e4) and the Slav (against 1. d4), so that I have deeper knowledge of these openings.

Three might be too many to learn. Concentrate on learning 1 well for white and one response for king and queen pawn openings
