Basically you want to occupy the center with 2 pawns, and then develop your pieces to develop a well-connected structure. Develop your knights first, then bishops, then queen, then the rooks. A queen generally stands best on the 2nd or 3rd rank and sometimes 4th - do not bring her out solo to take on b2 or whatever.

At your level you also want to go for an early castle. Say, between move 6 and 10.
