Openings as white

I am fairly knew to chess and have fell in love with the game recently and have started to study the game quite seriously. As black for e4 I play the Caro-Kann Defence and for d4 I have began studying the King's Indian Defence as it seems to be quite flexible. For white I have started to learn The London System however I do not know if my decisions are correct. I want to find opening that are flexible and that can be used against most black/white openings or at least have variations that can counter different openings/moves. Please can you recommend the best openings, where to study each opening and how many openings you should learn. Thank you.

"As black for e4 I play the Caro-Kann Defence" ++ OK

"for d4 I have began studying the King's Indian Defence" ++ OK

"For white I have started to learn The London System" ++ OK

"if my decisions are correct" ++ Yes, a viable selection.

"Please can you recommend the best openings" ++ Generally recommended for beginners is 1 e4 e5 and 1 d4 d5 as black and 1 e4 as white, but your selection is viable as well.

"where to study each opening" ++ By playing and analysing your lost games.

"how many openings you should learn" ++ None at all. Just play and analyse your lost games. So you accumulate experience about what works and what does not work.

Decisions on openings should be predicated on your predispositions on how you play the game.

Example: If left unchecked... I channel my inner Tal... and become a classical chess player of the 1850's I totally become an offensive berserker. I play the Caro-Kann and it's Northern cousin the Scandinavian Center Counter (which is a little more aggressive, yet less sophisticated) Both tend to have defensive pawn structures... The defense nature keeps my inner Tal in check & I think it lends to a better balance of technique. Same with the London... it's not the main opening I play with white... but it's up there.

For the beginner to intermediate level I highly recommend studying the Vienna game as white and the Caro Kann for black. Another alternative to the Vienna Is the queens gambit

which was one of my first opening weapons I learned. As you get better the Sicilian dragon will be great against e4 and the nimzo Indian defence is a great opening for black against d4. The Spanish(ruy lopez) is a very positional opening but with a basic understanding of the patterns and ideas it will leave you with some really interesting games.

My favourite openings include

caro kann

kings Indian defence

ruy Lopez

Some of my favourite gambits include: Evan’s gambit stafford gambit and the double muzio gambit

Beginners shouldn’t play the Ruy Lopez.

That is just bad advice!

What you want to do is play an opening which is simple and/or play an opening which is very universal.

For Example:

- Italian Game

- London

- KIA

Those are the top 3 for beginners. The lines are very simple and the positions can arise a lot.

I have seen beginners play some very risky/unsound openings.

- The Bowlder Attack

- The Hill Billy Attack

- The Advanced Checking line (This line doesn’t have an official name, but beginners play it a lot)

These openings are not considered good, but people play them anyway.

Then you have the beginners who live in a fantasy delusion where they think they are Tal and so they play this wild attacking Gambit lines.

- King Gambit

- Rausa Gambit

- Danish Gambit

Thats pretty much what they do
