Here is food for thought:

here is a website with a lot of information: http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~goeller/urusov/links/opening_analysis.html.
When you have a chess engine installed it has probably an openings book. It is a good idea to look after a game in the openings book, to see where the game went out of theory. In this way you will learn after every game some new moves and perhaps new ideas.
When you want to learn tactics playing e4 e5 etc is good, instead of more positional openings like 1. d4, caro-kann etc.
Good luck!
As White, you can play just about anything. As Black, you're doomed no matter what you play. :)
All seriousness aside (as the late Steve Allen used to say), you might want to buy, borrow or steal (okay, please don't steal) "Winning Chess Openings" by GM Yasser Seirawan. In this book, Yasser gives an overview of all of the major openings and their basic strategies. After reading the book, you should have a better idea of what openings seem appealing to you. After reading Seirawan book, you might want to buy "MCO-15" by GM Nick DeFirmian. The book has very little textual explanation, but it gives an evaluation for most of the important lines in the most commonly played openings. IMO, MCO-15 will be of limited use if you don't first read the Seirawan book (or any similar basic book on openings).
okay I've been playing chess for 3 years but I know absolutely ZERO openings. So does anyone know any good openings, books on openings, sites that teach openings etc.
