That is a really general question. Even for white, you have Fischer saying 1.e4 is "best by test" and then Kasparov starting his book off with saying that 1.d4 is the only logical move or something. If you are a beginner, I would recommend 1.e4, and related openings. The first ones I think most people learn are the "four knights" and the "giuoco piano". For Black, your choices depend on what white plays. A popular defence that is reasonably simple to start with is the French defence. If you need anything specified or diagrams send me a message.
