i usually dont, but sometimes i move my rook pawns, but if it is the only way to prevent checkmate, for example:
This is one question I always ask myself too while I'm playing. Obviously, the risk in moving one of the pawns is proportional to the opponents ability to get to your king. If the position is wide open or your opponent has good chances to attack on the kingside, its best to leave your pawns unweakened. However in closed positions it might be your best shot, such as in the KID where black uses a g and h pawnstorm. Also, obviously when the endgame is approaching and the king is no longer in mating danger, its appropriate to start gaining space. Of course I'm speaking in generals as I myself have a tendency to be very cautious with my f,g,h pawns.
This is probably a difficult question to answer since a lot depends on the total position but after one castles Kingside for example, at what point is it appropriate or sound to move any one of the three pawns protecting the King? Should they advance to grab space if they can?
