I think pawns are the most important piece cause it could be a queen on the other side of the board.
Pawns are impotant to me, for defensive reasons. The pawn are use to protect my stronger pieces in there defense. They can also gain the rank of a gueen, which is better then using a pawn. So, the pawns are used for defensive purpose only.

Pawns are especially valuable; they multiply in value as they advance up the chessboard in the endgame. A passed pawn has won countless games in chess history.

I hope you don't mean that you just make a bunch of pawn moves early and don't develop your pieces. Everything has its purpose, and if you aren't using all of your pieces, then it doesn't matter how many pawns you advance.
