I'm familiar with the names, however I do like to open up my queenside for a castling effect. Of course, I always counter with a Center Pawn and bring out my knights first.
for white i enjoy the ruy lopez, for the simple fact it can lead to a queen swap, and a center i control.
and for black, in tournaments i use the french, reason being its a solid position and an easily playable defensive game, but recently im using the sicilian dragon variation.

After playing many many openings i've finally settled on a few.
For white I play the Reti (Nf3) Because not too many people play it regularly, which means they don't know much of the opening theory, which in turn means i don't have to learn loads of opening theory, (Just the Basics)
For Black after 1.e4 I play the Pirc (1...d6) or occasionally the Caro-Kann (1...c6) because i find the basic stategies and tactics easy to understand.
And after 1.d4 I play the Kings Indian (1...Nf6) or occasionally the Grunfeld (again 1... Nf6). However I find that when i play Nf6 alot of people play the Tromp or London system etc, but, I prefer that as their easier to play against.
I like to play the Caro-Kann, because it leads to dull positions. I don't like chess.
i know a lotta openings but the best are:
Fried Liver as white(a pawn ahead,black unable to castle!!)
French as black(its a real uncommon opening in Turkey,leads to 2 wins guaranteed in a tournament!!)
for white i like Kings Gambit, seldom used nowadays but dangerous in the hands of a skilled attacking player like Fischer and spassky bothe of them used it in the past and scored smashing victories. For black, i like sicilian, for it's hard to break defense in the hands of an adept positional player.
