I was trying Patrov's defense (Russian defense) against white.

He plays e4, I play e5, then he plays qh5... pinning my f7 pawn. I can't figure out how to turn this around. aren't they typically going to play Knight f3? Think I'm missing something here.

I think there are a couple of ways to counter qh5. The first way is to play pawn to g6 which would be attacking the queen forcing it to retreat no longer pinning the pawn. The second approach which I don't like as much, would be to play nf6 which is traditionally how you play Petrov's defense. This move would be attacking the queen and the E4 pawn, and if the queen doesn't move you simply take it with the Knight.

Black should play 2... Nc6 3. Bc4 g6 4. Qf3 Nf6, or perhaps even 2... Nf6 3. Qxe5+ Be7 followed by 0-0 Nc6 and d5 with compensation for the pawn. 2. Nf3 is the strongest move and 2. Qh5 uncommon (if not dubious) but there are other moves White can play : 2. f4, 2. Nc3, 2. d4...

Thanks I was too tired to see that! I was thinking wtf is the patrov defense good for if queen just kills it? Makes sense now. And thx Nerwal that gives me some things to think about. I'm newish so I just have this and KIA in my pocket for now

After 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5, your choices are somewhat limited:

2...g6 is actually a terrible move, because of 3. Qxe5+ (taking a pawn and attacking both King and Rook). Black should play something else.

2...Nf6 is okay if played properly. After 3. Qxe5+ Be7 4. Nc3 Nc6 5. Qg3 O-O (Black has a pretty sturdy position, though he has paid a pawn for it).

2...Nc6 3. Bc4 g6! 4. Qf3 Nf6! is probably the best defense against the early Qh5. The Queen is chased away, and White’s early initiative is gone, while Black’s position is active and well-defended.

2...d6 and 2...Qe7 are also okay.

Hope this helps!

(To clarify, Petrov’s Defense can only be played after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3. Petrov’s Defense cannot be played after any other move such as 2. Qh5 or 2. Nc3. It must be played against 2. Nf3, otherwise it is not a Petrov’s Defense.)
