This argument has been going on since shortly after Vasja Pirc introduced the defense.  I suspect that the correct pronunciation in his country would be "peertz", but I say "perk" and very few people I know would be willing to challenge me on this face to face.  This reminds me of "gomboc"; how do you say the name of arguably the most exciting development in 3-D solid geometry in our lifetimes?  The Hungarians who discovered it, with help from a Russian mathematician, put umlauts over both O's, but I don't know how to put umlauts in comments and I say "gumbuck".

The proper pronunciation is peertz, but I pronounce it peerk. I'm not from central europe. Obviously.

You'll find the same thing with other foreign languages. The Chinese name "Chow" is actually pronounced closer to "Joe", for example.

So does that mean the next time I go to a Chinese Restaurant, I should order "Beef Joe-Mein"?

I pronounce "Pirc" as follows:  "Ka-Rap".  Play 1...e5, 1...e6, 1...c5, or 1...c6 instead!

Or 1...h6 preparing 2...Rh7 and castling by hand.

No, the correct pronunciation is 'pirts', the 'i' pronounced as the 'i' in 'in' and the 'c' like 'ts' (comparable to 'ц' in Russian).

But in Slovenian, it is somewhere between Peerts and Peertz. For sure.

This would be the correct pronunciation then, because Vasja Pirc was indeed Slovenian.

I was waiting for the native speakers to penetrate the mist for us! Thank you! So, the 'i' is more like a long 'e' sound? Very interesting!

Suvit-Angirash

I say pirc as perk because c = k
