Playing against the Benko

The Benko Gambit seems to be one of the strongest responses to 1.d4 and in MCO 15 there seems to be no way for White to fight for any advantage. Are there any books or any other resources about how to tackle the Benko? I have no problem with theoretical lines but countergambits like the Zaitsev Var. and others don't seem too promising.

There are a few systems worth looking into:

  • Currently the best systems seems the be the lines with double financetto. These lines are rather complex and theoretical but should give white a small but workable advantage if you know your lines well.
  • Also pretty good are the lines with e3 and a4. Though perhaps the advantage is smaller than in the double financetto lines white is a little more stable and less risk to run into complex tactical motives. These are the lines i play.
  • Last is the systems where white plays b6. Though these lines give equality by perfect play for black only white can play for an advantage. Risks are even lower than with the e3 systems.

Make your pick ;)

Most top players go for various lines of the Benkö accepted (especially the fianchetto, there was a time games were won by just playing Rb1 b3 a4 and Black had no idea what to do). Good for them, but for amateurs it is much easier to play the non-accepted or half-accepted lines like : 4. Nf3; 4. cxb5 a6 5. b6; 4. cxb5 a6 5. e3. Those lines do not always offer a theoretical advantage but they are practical and fundamentally sound, what more to ask.

double fiancetto is impossible after this line:

5. b6 is a good way to play against the Benko

B6 really allows white to get some counterplay on the kingside of black and black doesn't have the A file open for his rook. Personally I prefer B6
