Please say a little about the scotch

I like king pawn openings , but I am tired of the Ruy and having to retreat my bishop from b5, and I feel so blocked up with the giuco piano, I was wondering about learning the scotch. What are your thoughts about the scotch and are there many pitfalls in it for white? Stwils

Blocked up by the Giuoco Piano?  Man, you must really play those positions very badly.  White has the space advantage.  If anything, black is the one who should be cramped.

The nice thing about the Scotch is that it can be very dynamic whether an open (ish) or closed (ish) position develops.  The pitfalls are (as with most openings) that there is significant theory on the opening, and if misplayed can lead to some minitures.

Kasparov championed it some time ago, and as with most of the openings he chose to focus on, theory developed at a rapid pace.  I'd play through some of his games in the opening, there are some real gems.

Perhaps he's just having opening burn-out?  Nothing wrong with trying a new opening. Smile

I would suggest trying the English if you want something agressive (hence why you play e4).  It cuts down on the theory and can be played in a variety of ways!
