Reb, First of all you assume FirebrandX ended his over the board chess career at 1700 strength which is very probably not true. [I think you assume this]  I am guessing his playing strength was about 1850.

A player who switches to correspondence chess can improve his knowledge by 350 points IF he is good enough to win the USA Championship.  There is more to correspondence chess using chess engines than you may think.  While studying chess positions even with the help of chess engines--one learns a lot.

I am not talking about the average correspondence chess player--I refer only to the one who increases his ability enough to win the USA Championship.

The average correspondence chess player will only increase his over the board chess ability a small amount.

If centaur chess was nothing but guys using chess engines than the result would be all draws.  But, in any event, I am NOT talking about the average centaur--I refer only to the one who is good enough to win the USA Championship.  There are reasons he stands above the field.

This is proof, not what your gut tells you:

Tournament directors should use the appropriate published rating unless otherwise announced in all pre-tournament publicity. For events that begin prior to August 1st, the July supplement should be used.

The ratings shown on this page are official published ratings, which the USCF issues twelve times a year. As of October 1, 2012, official ratings lists are generated on the 3rd Friday of each month and become official on the 1st day of the next month. for unofficial rating information from recently rated events, see the 'Tnmt Hst' tab.

Well, then I will concede the point that many Centaur chess players would not do very well in USCF rated over the board tournaments.

I am quite willing to look at evidence and change my mind.  However I was only referring to one particular player who was skilled enough to win the USA correspondence championship. [that may be a special situation giving what it takes to win such a championship]

In fact , I believe that if an OTB player switches to CC play and uses engines and then attempts a return to OTB play his OTB results will suffer and his rating is likely to fall .  The engine use and having ample time to boot beomes a crutch .  These crutches , suddenly removed , in OTB play will have a very negative impact on the OTB player . Bigpoison's example is as I suspect . Now Ponz you can try and find an example of a strong CC player that has increased his OTB rating by 2 classes , or more , and I will be forced to reconsider but I doubt you can find such an example .  Where can I find a list of the top US CC players ?  I would like to compare their OTB ratings to their CC ratings .

Reb, I was talking about a 350 point increase not two full classes.

However, looking at the evidence your point makes more sense

than what I was saying and so I concede the point.

In fact OTB and centaur chess are completely different things.

So are men and women,,,

Obviously you have no idea what are you talking about. As usually.

this list is more difficult to establish OTB ratings for :

Yes, its rather obvious that the top USCC players are indeed using engines, whether allowed or not . How else can a 1300 OTB player be among the top 10 in the USA ?

Avatar of ponz111

There is also the USA ICCF Correspondence and they have a list of the top 60 currently active.  Many of my friends are at the top of the list.

When I was playing the top player from the USCF Correspondence was seeded into a spot in the finals.

I have given up just about all chess fairly recently.  I was playing vote chess and 15 minute chess.

Oops! Forgot to address this. You can find the current top list here:

You'll no doubt determine as I have that many of the top players are cheating per the official USCF CC rules on engine analysis.

Are there 2 US CC Championships? (ICCF and USCF?)

Avatar of TheOldReb

I used to like CC play , back when we used post cards and the best computers were not even 2200 strength , those days are gone . I gave it up in the 90s .

Avatar of ponz111

Reb. then you might remember the anticipation of getting the mail each day with a new postcard or two with a move or two to consider?
