Potential 1.Nf3 repertoire problem?

I've just started playing 1.Nf3 and 2.c4 systems recently, and on 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 g6 I've been playing 3.b4 as a temporary, easy to play line until I'm entirely confident with the White side of the Anti-Grunfeld and KID. My question is, what should I play against 2...d6, leaving open the option of after 3.d4 reverting back to a KID? Is 3.b4 still playable, or am I obliged to suck it up and go into a King's Indian?

Lol, that's what you get for trying b4 against a mainline defense #moveorderproblems

To be honest, you have to deal with it. You should love playing against the Kings Indian (I sure do!) even though you play it for the black side.

3.d4 and black probably could try the old-indian too with Nbd7 and e5. These systems are a bit more solid and play is much more positional.

I do like playing the KID with White, I'm just using 3.b4 as a temporary weapon until I learn all the KID theory...anyways I guess I have more incentive to hurry then Laughing

3.g3 should transpose but this will put you in a situations in which you'll be meeting the old indian and the hippo with and without g3. You can also try what I heard of as the "king's English" in which you play a dragon setup against the KID. You can play this against 'anything d6' so you wouldn't have to worry about how to meet systems in which Black waits around to see what you're doing.

Assuming you want to play a fianchetto kid, 2.g3 might also be playable allowing you to mark time with 3.Bg2 and only then decide on the pawn structure. This may require you to change how you meet ...d5 defenses since Black could play it before you play c4 and you might not even want to fianchetto against ...d5 defenses.

Well I mean if I transpose into the KID, I'll play 3.Nc3 and 3...Bg7 4.e4, because one of the reasons I play 1.Nf3 in the first place is I'd rather play the anti-Grünfeld than the Grünfeld proper.

I don't get it, why do you hate playing against the grunfeld?

Can't you just try the h4 lines? Those are about as good as any tries theoreticians have come up with.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.h4!? with some new interesting points

It's the same story as with any grunfeld, white has no advantage, but the play is interesting and fun!

I mean you can try a pleathora of anti-grunfeld options by not playing d4 which are also reasonable.

I usually play 1.Nf3 to avoid mainline slav, QG, benoni (which is stupid to avoid), and the QID

You can try this against Grunfeld stuff:
