Yeah this opening doesn't deserve a name, in fact, it is a bit insulting to Damiano himself, who correctly called it bad and yet it got named after him anyway.

Yeah, its a opening blunder

I’ve mis-clicked 2...f6 while trying to play something else a few times before.

I’ve discovered that Black can at least delay his demise after 3. Nxe5! by way of:

3...Qe7 where after 4. Nf3 d5 5. d3 dxe4 6. dxe4 Qxe4+ 7. Be2 followed by 7...Qb4+, 7...Bf5, or 7...Bd6, Black’s error becomes significantly harder to prove!

I would not take Black’s position voluntarily here, but I would consider the resulting position to at least be playable in the sense that Black still has decent chances in common gameplay.

McGregor drew against Bobby Fischer in 1964 with the Damiano.

just because one player drew against bobby fisher doesnt mean anything

GiggleNap

99% of people who play the damiano do not know that it is called the damiano

Damiano had actually intended to play the Latvian gambit, 2...f5. His 2...f6? was a mouse slip.

The Latvian gambit is not much better either, it is considered refuted, and is markedly worse than many other much more legit gambits, such as the King's Gambit. But anything is better than the Damiano defense.
