Damn, there are no bishop openings at height 0, U should move at least 1 pawn.Laughing

----------------------------

height 0 and 1: nothing

height 2:

  • symmetrical fianchettos 1.g3 g6 2.Bg2 Bg6 and  1.b3 b6 2. Bb2 Bb6  (+0.07)
  • fianchetto vs. centretto 1.g3 e6 2.Bg2 Be7 (+0.15)
  • centretto vs. fianchetto 1.e3 g6 2.Be2 Bg7  (0.00)
  • bishops opposition 1.e3 b6 2.Be2 Bb7 3.Bf3  (0.00)

Hmm ... how about this one at height 2 played in 2,244 master games according to Game Explorer?

CristianSoldier: it doesn't work. Bishops will take rooks instead.Wink

the bishop opening is 2. bc4

LoL and this is not a bishop opening for U?

Avatar of Yigor

Dafy: U are pedantic blindly following ECO terminology. A bishop opening is everything where U move only pawns and bishops, dats clear.Cool

Rich: an awesome bishop opening, I also spoke about it in the post #8.Wink

Okay dudes, I found the official Rybka's classification of bishop openings after 1.e4 e5 :

  1.  2...Bc4  +0.04
  2.  2...Be2  +0.00
  3.  2...Bd3  -0.04
  4.  2...Bb5  -0.07

Conclusion: 1.e4 e5 2.Be2! is definitely an underestimated opening!Laughing Actually, I tried it in 1 game recently.Wink

Avatar of Yigor

It seems that 1.e4 e5 2.Be2 transposes into a reasonably good Vienna game, dats the reason.Cool

One could also play the Levitzky's Attack's mirror, the Portugese Opening.

Here's a funny opening 1.e3 b6 2. Be2 Bb7 3.Bf3, kinda bishops opposition, of height 2 with the score around strict 0 :

Lokaz: yeah, I knew that one.Wink

I don't really understand those classifications. Please clarify.

Sorry, I spoke just about evaluations of openings by Rybka available on the web.

how can 2.Bb5 be worse than 2.Bd3

Obvious, no? If there's no knight on Nf6, Bb5 is virtually useless move.

Don't you mean Nc6?? And Bd3 blocks the d pawn, you might have to play c3 with Bc2 following. And no master has never played 2.Bd3, but 2.Bb5 has been played 44 times according to games explorer.

Yeah Nc6 of course, sorry. With 2.Bd3 I found the following line in databases

Nothing exceptional but nothing bad for white as well.Cool

Avatar of Yigor

Yeah, more or less useless. Just my opinion.
