Have been looking at Q Gambit accepted in Lasker's book and after (translated - hope I've got it right) 1 d4,d5; 2 c4 dxc4; he says NOT 3 e3..... because ....e5; 4 Bxc4, exd4, and 5 exd4, Bd6.

But why is this poor for white? Seems that white has a decent presence in the centre and could deal with attacks from black.  Can anyone help please?

Well, white has an isolated pawn which could prove a weakness, but I wouldn't look to Lasker for theory.

The opinion on that might have changed since Lasker's day. Tartakower said not e3 OR e4 because of e5. But lately e3 and e4 are the 2nd and 3rd most common replies after Nf3.

It's just a matter of style/taste. 3.e3 is a mighty good move.

Yuri Razuvaev has written a fine article about this move- to be found in the older Dvoretsky book "Opening Preparation".

Thank you all for your thoughts. I've added notes to my Lasker book!
