quick shutdown to Caro-Kann advance? (for black)

This is desperate. I hate playing black so much because of this line. I've tried Bf5 and c5, the first was okay but I still disliked it, and the second always got shot down by Bb5, Qa4 etc. It seriously makes me want to quit the Caro-Kann, any answers? If there isn't anything I can do, can anybody recommend an opening for someone who hates openings? Thanks

In the c5 line, how exactly can you get shot down by Bb5+ and Qa4? That idea doesn't look particularly dangerous. Solve that and the line is playable for you, yes?

Well, yes. I just find it quite risky.

How about the French Transfer 3...e6 ?

A perfectly sensible idea, as long as you keep the position closed until your pieces are developed.

I'll look into that. Sounds like the kind of style I would play. Thanks.

I used to play the caro advance as white.

This line was always annoying to me.

It probably goes without saying, but of course if white plays c3 instead of capturing...

Oh, 5.a3, I didn't know about this move. Probably would have helped me out.

I've been playing the 2 knights caro for years now. If I switch back I'll have to remember this.

Looking in the database, 5.f4 seems to be a popular / good one too.

Ok, so this is a line that's supposed to be fine.

But I have to admit I'd rather play the white side of this

Yeah, white gets some easy moves while black will need to understand how to equalize.

But I guess that's how a lot of openings are with black. You can't get an easy game if your opponent is well prepared in a main line.

a3 is nowadays the main line at high level and almost refutes 3...c5 in my opinion...

For example :

Wow, nice game.

Wish I had known this stuff a few years ago to beat up on my friend who liked to play this way. He doesn't even play the caro anymore tongue.png

Nice! I had noticed this in chessbase, but didn't know this was a well known idea.

Isn't it a bit premature to talk for refutation?

You mean such as 6...Be7? Thats the one that the engine gives a tiniest advantage to black ...but maybe its an error.

with c4 to follow. This is if Black chills.

In this position, 4....e6 is much better and immediately equalize for black. ( It transport to French but white has foolish dxc5)null

I play the ...Bf5 line without many problems. Why did you dislike that line? Black has a nice French Advance without a 'bad bishop'.
