Is this a good opener? I'm new to chess and this is the move I want to make naturally.

It’s not the best opening, but it’s surprising

It is very flexible. I think that it is a very good opening. If you take a look at the eval (stockfish 18, depth 60), e4 and d4 are + and Nf3 is +, which indicates that it is pretty decent (e4 being the best move according to stockfish)

The problem is the Reti cannot be forced. If you play the Reti, you must also know other openings. The English suffers the same problem. For a beginner, that's not good.

After 1.Nf3:

1...d5 - You can play the Reti with 2.c4.

1...c5 - Now your choice is the English (2.c4), Anti-Benoni (2.d4), Sicilian (2.e4), Nimzowitsch Attack (2.b3), or remain flexible with 2.g3.

1...Nf6 - Non-committal - you might get a Reti, you might not.

1...f5 - Now you get a Dutch if you play an early d4, the Anglo-Dutch if you don't.

1...g6 - Modern Defense - can often transpose to Symmetrical Englis, reverse Sicilian , e4-Modern, or QP opening.

For anyone that is a beginner, 1.e4 or 1.d4 are best.
