Can anyone explain how to use appendix 1 of The Oxford Companion to Chess.

Where is 3.Qf6 , the Gunderam Variation of the Ruy Lopez ?

In the e-book it says 4.Ba4 is played in 56% of all Ruy Lopez games. 

However 4. Ba4 is a top level variation which consists of 122 different variations.

122 different variations is too many to learn. We will probably never play many of these variations in our whole chess career.

Which of those 4.Ba4 variations are the most common ones that we should spend most of our time studying?
