sharp responds to 1.d4?

The Englund is terrible. I don't think that "sharp" is the same thing as "has a couple of tricky lines". I played in a tournament to learn more about it.

I found, compared with my other tournaments, that the Englund gives a gigantic advantage to the first player - so much so that a 2200 is "just trying to draw" against an 1800. Typically when a 2200 plays an 1800 you can look to try to win, but not with the Englund. On the plus side, you also get white too. So the whole name of the game in an Englund tournament is "win with white, draw with black".

The Benko Gambit isn't that 'sharp'... but it's definitely good!

I think what Black should be playing here, however, is the Englund Gambit with 1. ...P-K4 (e5) !?

More like 1...e5??

d4 f5!

why has nobody mentioned this yet?

1.d4 f5 is called the Dutch defence, and actually, quite a few people have mentioned it.

Ah yes I forgot about the dutch, definitely the leningrad is quite sharp. Still, I'd say the modern benoni is still moreso.

I don't know how benko is sharp.

white can play 5.b6 and "defuse" black's counter play
