Hello
I usually play the scandinavian as black. I decided that I want to try an new opening like the sicilian defense. Do you have any recommendation for which line I should play?
Thanks, Che_ssdave.
That would be like saying you currently have a blonde haired mullet, what color and style should you dye and style your hair as when nobody has ever seen your face or know your personality. Are you looking to go on a job interview or impress the girls that wear crop tops and looking for "partners"?
In other words, this is not something that can really be answered with the information given.
Your best bet is to play a bunch of games with 1...c5 against 1.e4 and experiment with different structures and move orders. Play rapid, not bullet. You will eventually find yourself playing random moves in some cases and actually making sense in others.
Once you find something that works, research what line is closest and then study that one THOROUGHLY!
This is a year long project. If you expect someone to name a Sicilian line, you look at a 20 minute you-tube video, and expect anything resembling success out of that, you are dreaming.
Back in late 1995, I was playing games in college against a few players that knew more than me then. I had been studying the books Winning Chess Tactics and Winning Chess Strategies at that time. I did not know openings. One guy I played was playing 1.e4. I tried various responses. 1...e5, 1...e6 and 2...d5, 1...d6 and 2...e5 (1.e4 d6 2.d4 e5), 1...c6 and 2...d5, etc. As you can see, I was all about getting in either ...e5 or ...d5, grabbing a share of the center. 1...c5 never really came to mind. After a hundred games or so, I was making more sense out of one over the others. 1...e6 and 2...d5. I asked of it had a name. I was informed it was the French Defense. More than 28 years later, I still play the French over the board, the latest occurrence being January 2. 2024 - 4 days ago!
In your case, you answer 1.e4 with 1...c5, play 100 games or so, only counting those where you had black and white played 1.e4. Try out different 2nd move responses more than once each, see what makes sense. Only after that do you proceed to find out what legitimate variation most closely resembles your understanding. Obviously in this first step, you are not worried about novelties at move 12. You are on step 1. That is step 953!
Good luck. If you are expecting names of variations and expect to watch a 20 minute video and think that will work, then once again - DREAM ON!
