Looks like it's heading for an inferior version of the Sveshnikov with White's bishop misplaced on e3 instead of its best square g5. I am assuming that White played Bf4?! to induce ...e5 and its Black's move and will play ...Nf6
pretty much forcing Nbc3. If its White's move, than Black has played poorly and needlessly lost a tempo.
totally untrue netzach.. Theory is based on principles and skill sets. Memorizing a ton of moves is meaningless since many players deviate very early on in an attempt to avoid theory. I think my rating is reasonable but ok not great
My theory for the taimanov runs about 5-8 moves. [dead serious, I loaned my book to my old student who making better use of it right now , she is 1970 USCF at 14 and she just now started to focus on specific theory. She would smile after people would rattle off moves in an opening knowing more than her but still lose] the rest is just principle based. I focus on playing ..d5 as soon as possible and advance in the center. If i lose but have a good position in blitz thats fine. The point is people often think their opponent is better in an opening when in fact they are not. there is a reason they are xxxx rating. A players total knowledge of the opening is equal to their level even if their specific knowledge in certain areas is greater.
Tony I see you play it often (sicilian). What can I say ? Rarely do I study chess-theory, am not that type of player, but awareness leads me to realise it is needed in many aspects of the sicilian defence ?? (particularly najdorf & old-sicilian)
