The reason why slav most popular d4 defence OTB is that if white doesn't play critical lines with c4, black can just develop naturally and get an equal game.

What possibilities are there for mainline slav players to play against such openings as the Veresov, Torre, Trompowsky, Colle, Colle-Zukertort and other such openings, that steer the game into Slavic territory or, perhaps more likely, positions a slav player would like? My method has been to play 2...Nf6 when white fails to follow up the C4, and hope for the best, knowing that I can get equality without too much fuss. I could see how it may not be possible or advantageous to get into something resembling a mainline slav without the pressure on d5 and e4 from c4 and Nc3. I am aware that these openings don't necessarily have anything to do with eachother, so the moves and structures will be completely different, but the spirit of my beloved Slav may still live in responses to these other openings and the strategies black my adopt.
