Smith-morra gambit variation

Recently I've been playing the smith-morra gambit against the sicilian. I've played this variation and though I've won, I"m sceptical of how sound it is. Can someone please tell me how good it is please.

It's rather weak. It is actually ok when White lets both pawns slip and plays on the open diagonal. If Black declines the second pawn with e6, he completely neutralizes the power of the light-squared bishop and has a safe game, up a pawn. Honestly, the danish two-pawn gambit is a much better try than that gambit, because the absence of the e pawn affects black alot worse than the absence of the c pawn. Remember that in the Smith Morra, black still has both centre pawns to create a strong barrier against your bishops.

I think I played my gambit when trying to play danish. Fritz has this -0.43 with Qa5+ suggested for black. I played out a game and blacks strong centre can not be fully utilised.

@pawnlever: thanks for sharing the trap for danish

There are a couple of dangerous variations of my gambit such as:

with traps on both sides.

It also has the benefit of not being a well-known and variations being prepared highly unlikely

I've played a similar opening in blitz, though without any prior analyzing, just to see what would happen

With Nc3 and 0-0 ....etc.

Like you, I'm leery of its soundness and White certainly has better (safer) options, but it makes for a classic gambit play of time vs material.

Fritz says your variation is slightly better batgirl.

Could someone check the game explorer to see if this position has been played before?

It has, and when Black accepts the two pawns in his pawn-crazy lust, White has won all 7 games from that position.

LIke I said though, Black is in almost NO danger with some correct defence, and can be safely a pawn up if he declines the second pawn offer and develops calmly.

If I were you, I'd give up this gambit in all situations other than a blitz game. ALso, in the line you gave, why on earth would Black play e5??. It is no sort of positional material return to balance the game, rather it hands the position to White on a silver platter, when Black is left with a miserable pawn structure and no compensation, because his extra pawn is doing him no good.

Finally, if your an aggressive player as White (like me), don't even bother with gambits in the sicilian! When Black plays the sicilian, he invites you to attack the Kingside. Just play the open sicilian, and you will have plenty of aggressive attacking options and no lost pawn!

Thanks for the advice siamesenightmare, I'll think I'll keep it to blitz and bullet only, a novelty at best, and hope blacks pawn hungry.

haha, unfortunately, he all-too-often is. I can't even say that without the help of the game explorer I wouldn't accept the other pawn!

Ah, chess designed to have fun. We don't see that sort of beauty too often these days.
