I'd have to say your best bet would be a good selection of books on the opening you'd like to work on, a nice database to get started playing through games from that opening, and some chess programs to practice against (Assuming to want to practice and tune your openings before trying them against people.) Remember most important, understanding the ideas and strategies behind what each opening is supposed to do, and the typical endgame that results from the common pawn structure of each opening.

It's gonna sound stupid, I know. But honestly, there probably is no better way to get a good, back of the napkin, overall beginning understanding of an opening that plain ol Wikipedia. The organization alone on wikipedia makes an opening more clear, at least wholistically, than any book I've seen. Just on the Sicilian, it has the whole thing laid out in outline form, by family/genus, and a good general description of every major line. After years of games and books, I had never actually seen it laid out like that. Obviously, for deep usable strategy and long variations, you'll need more. But you can't get a better general idea than just plain Wikipedia.
