I would argue that the Bongcloud is superior, as it prepares the king to lead the conquest of the center.
The Fred - A Great Opening
Man......whether you are joking or not, you got the names wrong. This is not called "the Fred", but the Gedult Attack - Hammerschlag Opening, and it doesn't have any features of a hedgehog formation. There is an opening called Fred Defense, which starts with 1.e4 f5.

Thanks for the corrections :-) I thought it was "The Fred" for years. Perhaps the fellas involved had first names of Frederick ?
Interesting that Mr Gedult and Mr Hammerschlag both worked on this opening. What do we know about them ?
So what's the Bongcloud ? Have we decided yet ?

There's an actual opening similar to this called the Fried Fox.
Hmm, they all start with the letter "F"... could it be... ?

Yeah, that's definitely the Fox. It's also called the Pork Chop and the Hammerschlag.

The Fred defense is 1. e4 f5.
Your diagram depicts the Gedult's Opening, also known as the Wandering King Opening: 1. f3 e5 2.Kf2.

so....what's wrong with beans and cake together?? MMMMMMM
Well it was something like sponge cake soaking up the tomato sauce from the beans like a sponge. The vision of my mate pushing cake round the plate soaking it up before sticking in mouth was very funny at the time :-)

A similar setup was played against me in blitz. It's just too hard to crack for most people given only 3-5 minutes. I think their reasoning is that they should be able to get way ahead on time, because they just make passive moves, and on the black side they're usually thinking not only are they ahead in space, but the king is on f2, so this makes them take more time to find something strong. Eventually I got minutes behind the clock with no advantage and so, with no increment, I eventually lost on time.
The Fred - A Great Opening
I'll take on anybody with the Fred. An inverted hedgehog. White makes ready for the endgame, keeps the king rook on the h file ready for a middlegame kingside bayonet thrust and tempts black's dark squared bishop away from the defence of the kingside with a spite check on c5.
The last time I played this was as a student. My opponent was eating baked beans and cake together as a dare. He may not have been taking the game seriously, but he didn't use indigestion as an excuse when I beat him
