There's an opening similar to the Fred defense you can play: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 f5.
Since it's similar to the Fred maybe we can call it the Ed defense.
I had never heard of the Fred defense until today when I saw this thread, I got excited and was eager to play it. I played the Reverse Fred defense because I was white: 1.a3 e5 2. f4.
I got a precarious position almost immediately but survived to the middle game. Then, in a better position, my opponent resigned, possibly because he was confused by the Fred defense, was way down on time or had something to do in real life, such as answer the phone.
My impression is that it should be played for fun only, in fast games.
