The openings we love and why we love them

Okay, this forum is wide open.

I believe that the openings that we choose reveal a bit about us as chess players.

Face it - there are so many chess openings out there, yet we often fall in love with ONE opening.  It is not to say that others aren't good, or this or that.

So why did you choose the opening that you play?  This could be an interesting dialogue! :-)

BTW, soon I will give my reason for my choice, 1. f4!

Golbat

I go for the French and the Slav as Black so that I either get an equal game or a dynamic game.

BirdBrain

Okay, now is the next part of this - is there a reason you chose the Slav and the French out of EVERY opening choice there is?  What appealed to you about those openings?

CaiusF

There is an opening called A04:Reti Opening I think. Basically is 1.Kf3 2.Kc3

Or I simply move one of the knights to make trouble and mobilize the enemy pawns without moving my troops, which is an advantage to some point.

I play the Scotch because it's pretty straightforward and easy to keep equality, plus it usually ends up with a lot of pieces exhanged, going into an equal endgame (which I enjoy). As black I play the hyperaccelerated dragon, which I'm just learning really, the nimzo-indian (which is something that I think most players should have to hand) which is a lot of fun to play, the bogo-indian which I'm learning, but is similar enough to the nimzo to make things straightforward. I also like playing the Reti gambit against the French, it's got me a fair few wins in live games because it unnerves players and they end up playing weakening moves because of it. As white against a sicilian I'll just go for the main line and try for equality, and hope that my knowledge of the opening as black is good enough to give me a good position. Against the English and various other openings I either play straightforwardly or follow the texts in the Richard Palliser book "The English and Other Unusual Openings" which is a great book :)

BirdBrain

Wouldn't 1. Nf3 2. Nc3 be more like a Two Knight's Attack?

Normally the Reti that I know of is 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4, a reversed Benoni.

mynd_zye

against d4, c4, AND the reti, I like to use a dutch leningrad type set-up. It has the advantages of the kingside fianchetto as a basis for queenside attacks, and the advanced f pawn can can useful in initiating a kingside attack. A word of warning, though, this is not a technique for the faint of heart. Things can get pretty hairy if your playing an attacking player before you have perfected your move orders and defenses, both of which take both study and experience to learn.

KillaBeez

French baby!

BirdBrain

I think the Leningrad is an excellent setup and White must prove his advantage, which is what often gives it a double-edged standard.  Of course I don't like the Sicilian and it is double-edged, but that is because I like working on the kingside - key word - KING! :-)

And I have begun to revive a bit of interest in myself with the French due to the ...e6 move order that makes the Dutch and the French accessable.  Currently, I play the Pirc/Philidor, but that may be changing ONCE AGAIN! lol

BirdBrain

shakje, do you ever venture the Scotch Gambit from time to time?

KillaBeez

I really like the French because I like that it gets beginners out of book, leads to dynamic and boring positions, and gives lots of room for analysis and error.

The_Pitts

hypermodern defences, Indian games, the Grünfeld,"yeah you just go ahead and take the center, see if I care."  It does say alot about me as a player.

BirdBrain

I really do believe that a person's choice of opening shows what kind of person they are...this is why I get out of book quickly, so that the truer nature of the game shines through.

BirdBrain

I like 1...f5 against 1. Nf3.

Ray_Brooks

I love playing the King's Gambit (1 e4 e5 2 f4...) because it has continued to scare me, every time I play it, even after 34 years of practice!

BirdBrain

LOL that is the funniest response so far, and so true!  So you like living on the edge?  Dare you to play the Black side with 2...f5 then!  I believe it is called the Pakeldaktis Countergambit!?!

MsCloyescapade

I agree with Ray... I like to be put in that oh crap! state of mind... makes me think on my feet (good or bad) always makes a game interesting...

jtotten

some where in here is a lesson. Like the day i kicked a hornets nest long ago...

raberbar

lol I really like playing against the King's Gambit, it must be something about defending a really sharp position. I also like the Jaenisch gambit 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 f5!?. Against d4, I have played just about everything after Nf6, but my favourites are the Nimzo and the Budapest gambit (something solid, and something crazy)

As white, my favourite is b3 (I like hypermodern with white, I  feel like I have good chances at dissolving the central pressure favourably)

uritbon

the kings indian defence just struck the thin fiber of my soul, when i finaly get the chance to move f5 i feel awsome! untill i realise i'm not playing the kings indian defence, but some weird spanish that i somehow transposed into a bizzare kings indian defence, then comes defeat...
