In this position, what is the best line to play for both white and black. Would you recommend for black to play e6 or c6 or dxc4 etc and why... and then what would you do after that. Please play on a few moves and leave comments Smile

Thank You

Freddie_Confident

ed, none are paticuarly better than the other (except maybe dxc4 is slightly inferior) but it depends on what style of play you have etc!

Try for Black 2...e5 and normaly 3.dxe...d4! It's a very impertenent move, badly underestemated that holds a very promising game for Black called The Albin Counter Attack!

The_Pitts

e6 and a close second c6 IMHO

The Lasker Trap is beautiful, besides that if Black plays well, should easily even the odds of the game!

Personally, I think the Albin Countergambit is overrated.  If white is cognizant of black's threats, it's difficult to make much of them.

e6, c6, and dxc4 all have their subtle differences, but the general character is similar -- quiet openings that are solid but passive, producing more of a positional manuevering game than a tactical slugfest.  e6 is the most commonly played of them, but they're all fine.

If you want something with more excitement, you should avoid 1.d4 d5 altogether, and play 1...Nf6 (the Indian defenses) or 1...f5 (Dutch defense).

The Queen's Gambit - Declined or Accepted - is a huge section which cannot be discussed in just a few lines of postings - you have to get hold of Opening Treatises for that.

I like the semi-slav, but it can lead to really complex postions, that involve both tactics and positional play.

Freddie_Confident

ye ed you should have a look at the lasker trap in the albin, that is a good one but you have to learn all other lines because if they dont play e3 which is the bad move, then you could be stuck!

wolvesy

you should play e6,nc3,c5! this is called the tarrasch defence and it can leave you will an isolated queens pawn, but if you play it well, then you will have a great opportunity for attack...

This early in the game best move is a matter of style, preference and comfort.  There can be bad moves but no true best move.  In the last World Championship the preference was c6 but e6 and dc are just as playable.  If you are willing to risk White knowing the proper lines you can mix it up with e5 or Nf6.  All in all I would say c6 gives black the most chances but is the most complex and most difficult to learn.  e5/Nf6 are the weakest of the "normal" moves and the least likely to be seen at higher levels.

Nf6 is terribly weak after cxd5 Nxd5 e4

CarlMI

I don't think the Marshall is the best line, I would only play it OTB but you can use it to surprise and confuse your opponent.  It is not terribly weak, only inferior to best play.  Often White overreaches trying to "punish" Black for his "obvious" blunder.

i like the albine counter gambit

killer_instinct_2406

there are lots of lines for black to play with :)

2. Nf6 looks like a good follow-up for Black, continue by fianchettoing the King's Bishop.

ADK,

If you want to play d5, Nf6 & g6 vs. d4 you would be better off with the Grunfeld.  With the Marshall (1. d4 d5 2. c4 Nf6) you are in for a hard fight to keep 1/2 point with little chance for a fulll point against a knowledgeable opponent of equal skill.  With the Grunfeld (1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5) you have a much better game in a line you can play against anyone.

I typically play e6 against stronger players and play the Budapest gambit against weaker opposition.
