Just discovered tiger's modern with 4....a6.  Anybody got any PGNs?  I usually use 365chess database...... but 4...a6 is a desert.

What a great day.  chess.com has plenty on this opening.  Better start using the in-house sources instead of 'eating out'.

But as for the 'modern' - 1....g6 is virgin territory for me, I'd appreciate comments & thoughts & tips.  But no neg. stuff.  Let me enjoy the discovery for a while.  thanks.

Hi al-hajji,

You might be interested in joining the "1...g6 Modern Defence" group (http://www.chess.com/groups/home/1g6-modern-defence); I just joined it yesterday.

Best of luck with your Modern!

I've asked for membership.  Certainly need comments & guidance.  The whole damn opening feels like living in a prairie-dog community - on a quiet sunday afternoon.    Or like those countries where they drive on the other side of the road.   Strange.

I know what you mean.  It seems like you have to throw out all the classical lessons learnt by chess masters over the years: control of the center; rapid piece development; etc.  I am finding myself drawn to this type of opening though because:

  1. no need to learn the latest theory on the millions of openings;
  2. I hate replying to the Sicilian Defence;
  3. it seems that no matter what White plays you can play the Modern, and the resulting games lead to familar (to you) structures and ideas;
  4. your king is quickly moved to safety in most lines; and
  5. your position is solid while your opponent (hopefully) overextends themselves, in fact you try to provoke them into overextending themselves.

Downsides I see are 1. if your opponent plays a non-aggressive game their position is also good, and 2. if you are not careful you could be overrun by a massive pawn storm.

Regards,

Justin
