" good unorthodox " may be an oxymoron.
Unorthodox openings?

I'm not sure if they're "good" or not, but:
The Crab
The Hippopotamous
The Fried Fox
The Hammerslag
The Parham (Yeah, while popular among beginners, it's still unorthodox and poor)
... just a few that come to mind; and mind you, my spelling may not be on target ...

right so Any unexpected opening is Good right?
I'm not even sure all this stuff has names.
start with a simple and VERY unexpected move.
1. Nh3 fits the bill.... (Ammonia Attack?)
and go from there.

I'm starting to like the Polish opening as white. It's 1. b4 according to the game explorer. Most of the people I've played it against haven't seemed sure of how to respond and it's good for quickly deploying the dark square bishop and you can actually build a darned good center fairly quickly.

I've also found that 1. a4 can derp people out pretty hard.
I believe that is the "crab".
Most unorthodox openings are poor simply because they violate the principles of opening theory. As White, you open with a4 or h4, you completely surrender the advantage of playing White and hand Black the advance/forward move (center control) that should have been yours to begin with.
Probably the worst unorthodox openings, though, are the Hammerschlag (sp?) or the Fried Fox:

The hypermodern player Richard Reti played 1.g3 several times at Baden-Baden in 1925, with mixed results. 1.g3 received renewed attention after Pal Benko used it to defeat Bobby Fischer and Mikhail Tal in the 1962 Candidates Tournament in Curaçao, part of the 1963 World Championship cycle. Benko used the opening the first eleven times he was White in the tournament.
Indeed.
