Weird Responses to Reti Opening

What do YOU play after 1...d6? Most of the times Black will go 2...e5, but this is not the only option.

2.e4 c5 is a Sicilian, most of the times not wanted by Reti players, 2.g3 e5 (or pretty much any reasonable move) is hardly conclusive or anything, and 2.d4 Bg4 is a fairly respected "white square strategy" positional approach (Black wants to go on like ...e6, maybe also ...c6 and d5 etc).

And against 2.c4:

f5 controls the e4 square... doesn't d5 do the same thing but also keeps the kingside safe?

1...f5 controls e4, and creates an assymetry from move one.

Risky? Might well be. So what? Can you exploit the weakness?

2.e4 has been tested many times, and white has no advantage.

I can't... that's what makes me a 1200

I can smash you with all of these weird replies and I can smash people much stronger than you with them too

ACTUALLY,  there's no such thing as "trying" to boast.  You either are or you aren't and I do not.

This is true, but you seemed very confident of beating the OP, which just suggests to me that either you're bragging or know something others don't (e.g. know the OP personally)

I'm really good at smashing class players and beginners.  The comment isn't to boast,  it's defending what is "Reasonable play" for our intents and purposes

So if you're good at beating class players, you are >2000 strength then (bearing in mind 1900 is class A)?

I think Reti Opening is more complicated than English Opening. I still do not know how to refute it tongue.png. But I will do it later. It is a good choice of opening. Good day, Mi_Amigo!

luisen_97

Well, Mi_Amigo. There is not much information regarding the Reti opening, for black. On YouTube, they show you lateral lines. But then I show the main line happy.png.

3...Nc6 is stronger.

luisen_97

@my137thaccount, that's an alternative. I like more 3 ... c5 happy.png.

Play whatever you like. I would surely play the Reti all the time as white if people answered the meek 3.e3 with 3...c5.

luisen_97

MI @pfren. I do not know much about Reti. I like 3 ... c5 because I'm familiar with the French defense. I do not know the plans with 3 Cc6. It would be very nice if you could explain what the plans are with 3.Nc6. How should your pieces develop black? happy.png.

pfren

3...c5 offers white no advantage objectively. BUT- the game is sufficiently complex, and I think it is easier for Black to make a mistake.

3...Nc6 on the other hand gives much simpler positions, and it almost anti-climactic: Black gets an equal (but not terribly ambitious) game with very little effort. The plan is very simple: play ...e5, without giving white a target at c5 to open up the play. I was thinking that 4.b4!? might offer something, but this is not the case.

That's why 3.b4 is the current trend, although Black has three good answers against it.

Don't worry, he will come back with a new name.

He is a resident forum troll, and this last account lasted for one day. Basically you wouldn't even bother replying to his stupid comments.

I do play b4 but with good responses

You play b4 on the wrong move. 3.b4 is better than 3.e3 intending 4.b4 as black has 3...Nc6.

Mi_Amigo

yes I saw that and I like that line, I'm gonna try it

luisen_97

It seems that 3 ... c5, if it leads to complications happy.png. I have analyzed the variant with 3 ... Nc6, which I think black has a simpler game wink.png.

The Reti opening is a somewhat complex opening, in a video they recommend the movement 6 ... Bg4, before this white it has 7.Qb3 !, followed by Ne2, with a good initiative. Better is 6 ... e5, followed by Bc5 and Ne7.

I_AM_Sher_Locked

I think at least 1... f5 and 1... d6 are good for black, a problem with playing Reti is that it can transpose to almost everything, so you should play reti only if you are comfortable in almost every other major opening.
