For beginners, e4 is usually the way one starts. Ruy Lopez (Spanish opening), I imagine, is one of the first you'll learn ( I did).

As black you can't really choose which defense to play before white moves, but typically you have to pick a defense for e4, d4 and c4, each.

Beginners should not really focus on a repertoire but more on principles.

I prefer the four knight opening best

For beginners one of the openings you can start of with is...e4, e5, Nf3, Nc6, Bc4, Bc5, Nc3, Nf6 (almost every beginner on the planet learns this opening when they first start playing). This opening can go to the Fried Liver attack or a variation of the Guicco Piano. The next opening is a little more complicated and I recommend learning this after the first opening. The second opening is the Queen's Gambit. You can find many videos online about this opening explained in depth. In this opening you will learn so many tactics and variations and improve your chess immensely. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I hope this helps.
