What do you think of the Caro-Kann?

I don't play the Crappy-Kan't Defense; preferring to play 1.e4 e5 and invite white to do whatever. So my opinion about the defense would be from one who plays against it rather than someone who plays it as a preferred 1.e4 defense. That being said, it does journeyman work as a defense, its fairly reliable and safe--which is not exactly a ringing endorsement. It doesn't elicit anything stronger than a luke warm response when facing it---"oh ,it's the CK again." So, it's the "Warm Lettuce" of 1.e4 defenses.

Super Solid!

The Caro-Kann is more positional than tactical.

To play the Caro Kann well.... IMO you have to have a balanced technique when it comes to playing positional and tactical chess. Positions based on the pawn triangle (which the Caro-Kann is based upon) work best (IMHO) when you are playing the triangle aggressively. It has a lot of inherent "positional" defense built in to the theory which gives the Caro-Kann player a platform to play somewhat aggressive.

defiantly a defense that you could play a lifetime
