What is the best opening for black
In general; the best for black is
f4 e5
g4 Qh4#
That’s fools mate. Another good opening for black that isn’t checkmate is
a3 e5
Ra2 d5
h3 Nf6
Rh2 Nc6
Black has a big lead in development.
Openings aren’t just black, openings are both players. Black might have a “best opening” against some of white’s moves, but in general there isn’t a “best opening” for black.
Your only important task in the opening is to reach an early-middle-game position in which you feel comfortable and confident. Whatever opening line gets you there is the best opening for YOU.
For myself, I like unbalanced, non-symmetrical positions in which both White and Black have advantages and disadvantages. This leads to some interesting games.
So as Black I play the Sicilian Najdorf against 1. e4 and the King's Indian Defense against 1.d4.
So, I'm now 12 - 2 my last fourteen games., getting about half my pts back after my 3 - 22 marathon three days ago.
Regarding openings, still unsettled as Black and unsure if the Rousseau Gambit and the Budapest Gambit, as much as I like them, are good choices.
I don't like KID... it's too unlike what I normally play. And I tried Caro Kann and didn't like it.

Play E5 or the Sicilian and NF6 against D4. Against anything else (except F4) play E5
Thanks!
A friend has recommended the Sicilian. I've never really looked at it. I'll do that this morning, seriously.

I don't understand why you recommend Fool's Mate. It's just wanting to kill the game right from the onset and doesn't work unless your opp is just completely not paying attention. Then, when it doesn't work, you end up just having wasted moves... and another one or two to get your Queen back where it belongs that early.
Thanks!

I will qoute gothamchess on this one: nobody under 2000 should play the sicilian
You will know every variation of the opening and all the traps
Actually, @MaetsNori recommended the French a few days ago... I forgot about that, so that's my new idea

There is no such things as knowing all variations and all traps in the sicilian. Grandmasters who have studied a specific sicilian come close to this. But one person will not be able to solve the sicilian alone.
