I think the skill level of the players would be important.

If the players are good enough that they can play any opening (despite never having played it before) without falling into any opening traps - all well and good.

Now imagine a different scenario: White is a 1. b4 specialist (I'm just using it as a example) and duly plays 1. b4

If Black is not a 1. b4 specialist their choices are:

1). play the White side of an opening they do not know

2). Let their opponent have the White side of an opening they mabe very familiar with...

I'm just ignoring TF now. Fiveofswords, I respect you, you're a good player but I can't believe that you are really saying that after 1.f3 you wouldn't mind which colour you were assigned. Black is so clearly better. If 1.f3 was played but it was still White's move then maybe that would be more accurate. I just can't agree. I'm sorry.
