What's your favorite opening and why do you play it?

Ruy Lopez is my favourite against e5

  • Open Sicilian (from both sides)
  • King's Indian
  • Ruy Lopez
mrOpenRuy

samuel how could you love the kid, these variations imma show are literally all i get

the exchange is so goddam annoying that it made me quit the KID

mrOpenRuy

but its these positions as black that i love but have so rarely ever gotten sadly sad.png

i love both sides in this position, i think people are just scared to learn more than 7 moves of theory, so they play a system opening like the london, colle, stonewall (which cant really get played at the high level for a win)

mrOpenRuy

or whatever their god gotham recommends...

Well I play the queens gambit and the french, and have had pretty good success with them (escpecially the french) Id say, probably the queens gambit declined tends to be the most fun for me.

QGD is legend status, you can win some good games with this setup:

654Psyfox

Pirc Defense, because it avoids kings knight opening.

That opening is so annoying!

mrOpenRuy

shockingly, out of the 120 games in the pirc only about 20 defend the e pawn

but when they do your win rate goes down to around 28%

maybe learn your opening first dude

No matter what opening you play there is always something like this.

  • Sicilian - Bowdler Attack
  • French - Exchange
  • King's Indian - Exchange

Playing any opening means you sometimes have to accept variations you don't necessarily like.

If someone doesn't play the main line they either don't want to or don't know how to.

Some inferior sideline doesn't detract from the opening itself. We just have to get better to play stronger opponents who know how to play these openings. You can just keep beating everyone who plays these inferior sidelines in the meantime.

A lot of the new generation of chess players are very complacent. They don't try to learn anything and just complain all the time.

"Sicilian is too sharp!

Queen's Gambit is too theoretical!

Ruy Lopez is too positional!

King's Indian is too aggressive!

If I play those openings I might lose because I don't know anything! I can't be bothered!"

The list of openings which are apparently too hard just grows longer every day. I even saw someone complaining that the Italian was too positional and theoretical. Well what do you play then?

They just expect everything to come easily when it doesn't.

It's the type of people who are absolutely thrilled whenever they beat a -200 rated player with Scholar's Mate.

"Oh BOYYO! Scholar's Mate does it again! YIPPEE!

Why would I play the Sicilian when I can play the Busch-Gass Gambit and beat a -200 rated player in 4 moves?"

Exchange is my favorite line to face!

You have already given me a sure half point and I now fight you for the other half!

I mean, play the Advance or 3.Nc3 and you could actually be trying to beat me!

Nothing annoying about 3.exd5 at all! Bring it on!

Really? Have you heard of the Austrian Attack?

sansuk

Tennison Gambit is 3.Ng5, not 3.Ne5 , Ne5 is just a waste of time

Michas321

I love king's pawn opening!

im about to dis most the openings mentioned here and what should be played

4 knights italian??

why do you play this, you would have much better luck in a open sicilian, ruy lopez, or at least a c3 italian. where your chances to win are higher

London system

this open is all but good, you give up your winning chances and go for equality (if black knows the first 5 moves) the london ignores the fighting aspect of chess and instead goes for an opening where you can auto pilot the first 10 moves. YOU ARE NOT LEARNING CHESS, YOU ARE LEARNING THE LONDON SYSTEM

caro kann is nothing but a suprise weapon

its not bad but i will explain why people should not be playing it much

and then you have blacks OTHER option, the sicilian. Which fights for a win

How are you not learning chess by playing the london system? Sure, it’s not very helpful if white just premises the first 10 moves, but you cannot discount the WHOLE opening just because some people play it on autopilot. And those people are just GothamChess subscribers anyway! Also, HOW IN THE WORLD IS THE CARO KANN JUST A SURPRISE WEAPON??? It’s solid, principled and it can also fight for a win! Im sick of the steroteype that caro is drawish, there are so many modern, dynamic lines that give black a position to fight for a win!

Scotch, because some people make such a hash of it, for example my last blitz game which was mate in 10

i really feel like the scotch equalizes for black, ill give why

The scotch is a beautiful opening! Engines have shown that white can’t really get an advantage out of the opening, so even though it might be 0.00, the scotch gets lively positions in which white gets a very playable game!

I completely agree!

mrOpenRuy

the caro is actually very drawish, and puts black in a passive position
