Looks like a playable position for both sides to me

Tal variation main line at master level is 5. c4. I think the engine prefers 5. Bd3, but it looks like a pretty miserable, pointless move to be honest and not the reason anyone should play the Tal variation. If someone is going to play 5. Bd3 then they may as well play the Short IMO.

According to the engine, the position is dead equal. The results tell a different story though. This would be the "dynamic equalibrium" where position is equal but very imbalanced.

Ye this looks better for white than Bd3, but frog says this game will most probably be decisive 🐸👍

All this frog roleplay shows exactly why you shouldnt play caro

Sea_TurtIe

the scotch is looking for solidity, if you want to truly fight for the win play something else

ZLHLBH

queen's pawn is unexpected amongst beginners so i play that against lower rated players

Titanium_CAHESS

As white:
Scotch, Ruy Lopez.

As black:
Sicilian (against e4), Grunfeld KID (against d4).

I’m a beginner so I don’t really know any, but all of the comments above seem like good ideas to try.
cosmicfloof77
Most of the time I just play d4 and see what happens.

With Black, it depends on the month. Currently going through a French and Semi-Slav phase, and I think I really like the Semi-Slav, but I might make the French a secondary opening. With White, it changes on a daily basis.

Wow,

WalnutArcher

I'm not sure what I expected, but the answers are way more diverse than I expected.

WalnutArcher

Just under 100 answers. tbh I half thought that people were gonna start spamming "scholar's mate is the best opening ever and no one can change my mind.", or something like that.

Poweranony

given the opportunity, i like to play the van geet-napoleon attack.

A lot of people are going to trade everything on d4 which gives white a strong attack.
Even if not, white can still get good and dynamic positions. It has a high win rate for white at all levels, including masters.

Sea_TurtIe

benko gambit, ive studied it to the death and i can beat much higher rated people with it

sadly i rarely get it because people at my levels premove london systems or some other sideline

badger_song

My favorites as white are the Danish and Latvian Gambits, I enjoy playing like a drunken Hussar with a board that looks like the players just dumped the pieces and set them up where they landed. As Black, I like the QGA and 1.e4 e5 because I like inviting white to punch me .You would have to pay me to play anything called semi-open or semi-closed. especially 1e4 c5...the Spaghetti Defense. I like Openings/Defenses in which failure makes you look like Carlos Mungus, rather than Magnus Carlsen. I heartily applaud everyone here who ignores all the effete, doo-doo, pedantic analysis and play their favorite opening JUST BECAUSE.
