When I am playing king's Indian defence and if opponent deviates from theory and plays a weird setup I am confused everytime wheather to play e5 or c5. In king's Indian defence when is c5 better compared to e5?

Only ...e5 is the true King's Indian Defense. ...c5 is more a Benoni Defense.

Only if White answers d4-d5.

Benonis are characterized by White Pawn on d5 vs Black Pawn on d6.

It is normally correct to play c5 instead of e5 when White has misplaced his c1-Bishop.

In the Averbakh variation where ..e5 is not possible ( at least not straight away, without additional preparations), Black commonly goes for ..c5 setups.

It's usually a pretty good break if you can get it in. Of course, e5 is the more thematic King's indian break, but I've always preferred the benoni more anyways.
