Not that I'm very high rated, but going on what far better players have said I'd suggest learning a few openings to the point where 3 moves in you can say "aha. the XXXX" but at our level it's just as well to simply develop your pieces with any semblance of plan, it's unlikely many opponents will follow more than 5 moves into theory unless you both use a database or book of some kind.

Just wondered what people thought was the appropriate level to start trying to learn openings? I got a couple books on openings, for both black and white, but right now, at 1200 chess.com rating, the opening never follows more than one or 2 book moves on both sides.
