why d4 is better than e4

Bobby Fischer never played 1.d4.  He would occasionally play 1.c4 and would transpose to some QGD lines if was to his liking.

chasm1995

I like to play the English, c4.

There exists a mysterious file between d and e, and playing that pawn two squares ahead is the best opening move IMO.

This is why Bobby Fischer (Booby Phisher is more like it) was an idiot.  He thought e4 was so great, and that the Winawer was unsound.  Hmmm...he had more trouble against the Winawer than anything else.  Nobody ever sees me talk junk about the Nimzo-Indian or Slav (the two that give me the most fits).  No, I talk junk about lines I have a statistically high score again (Alekhine [Surely not the reason I don't play e4 any more], Benko).  Also 1.e4 scores 2 full percentage points below 1.d4 statistically.  So again, Fischer (Phisher) was an IDIOT!

Cannot tell for sure Bobby was an idiot, but now I can officially declare that ThrillerFan is a fruitcake.

What makes e4 better than d4? Is it because controlling of central squares and open diagonal for king bishop? Its subjective from my opinion. It is relate on your style play. Tactical player prefer e4 but d4 is no less inferrior. 1.d4 offer strategical game on long term planning in the opening. I think both e4 and d4 is equal in evaluation

1. d4 makes for many postional lines that deal with a totally different set of tactics as opposed to 1. e4 openings and there are several lines where WHite plays patiently, though there are also some really dynamic and attacking lines as well (think Grunfeld, Benko Gambit, Dutch and King's Indian Defenses as well as interesting games like the NImzo-Indian, Queen's Indian, Modern and Pirc Defenses etc. Historically, it was almost poor form to play 1. e4 in the 18th and 19th Centuries, and 1.d4 was the preferred choice for a long time, with gambits being a large part or the early repetoire. It was a time when people would accept the gambited piece or pawn almost automatically as a gentlemens agreement. I am not sure who really was the advocate of moving to 1. e4 in the latter part of the 19th Century whether it was Tarrasch or Staunton or even Morphy or Marshall but as TF stated, 1. d4 scores higher than 1. e4 as opening choices among players 2200+ USCF/FIDE in their games and is also a staple in their opening arsenal. The answer seems to be that closed games require more patience and positional play in closed positions than does  in open games with 1. e4 but this is more opinion than fact from my own experience.

Oddly, I am getting more OTB games in blitz now with players playing 1. d4 d5 or 1. d4 f5 and 1. d4 Nf6 than I am with 1. e4 games. Strange getting away from open games in Blitz but refreshing as well

Money Mouthit depends on yur style,if ure an attacking player and like open games u will play e4,but if u r a positional player and like closed games,u will play d4

Tarrasch was once asked "To what do you attribute the rising popularity of 1. d4 on Grandmaster level?"

He answered: "Laziness."

Then again, another GM (whose name I can't recall) changed form 1. e4 to 1. d4 and said it was because "that way, my pawn is already protected". :)

Remember, this is also the guy that gave us Randomized Chess in some way (Chess 960) yet in the later part of his life was overshadowed by personal demons and his anti-semitic rants that a lot of people forgot what he managed to do in the 60s and 70s for American chess and the game in particular. I remember hearing stories (whether they are true or not I do not know for certain) of Fischer in the last years of his life wandering homeless through Reykjavik playing chess in coffee houses and though still brilliant in play, very few people had any idea they were sitting across from a former WGM and Wch chess player.

Very interesting assessment.

Fischer was certainly NOT homeless in the last years of his life in Iceland .

Ubik42

Fischer had been homeless since Nixon went to China (an old Vulcan proverb)

Irjene

D4 in general wins labour 2 % more games then e4 mainly due to the scilian defence

Ubik42

Not to the extent Fischer was, he was homeless in no leass than 7 different countries plus New York City.
