why d4 is better than e4

To make it a fair match, both sides will be white at the same time, and each will play their preferred opening.

it's better to start with e4 when you are a beginner and work your way to d4 when you are good at it.

e4, best by test..according to ficher.

e4, best by test..according to ficher. again

e4 still

Last_Check

most probably because it's better to have more pawn's the side you castle.

no_time_to_think

still e4 is the best...

I'll let you think that.  I, personally, think that it's by prefrence.  I have played against people that have a realy agressive e4 and I have played against people that have a realy agressive d4.  Does it realy make a difference which one you use?  I think not.

still e4.

Many players are being rather assuming here, and believe that 1.e4 is best without even having looked at playing 1.d4 in their life. Chess players are usually taught when they begin to play 1.e4 so they get the chance to play cheap tricks on f2 so they stay interested in chess, and when they get stronger they are just too stubborn to move on to alternatives. They're just too narrow-minded.

Having played 10 of the 20 first moves in tournament competition (b3, b4, c4, d4, e4, f4, g3, g4, Nc3, and Nf3), and after having gone thru many databases, I can safely say that 1.d4 or other moves like 1.c4 or 1.Nf3 that eventually transpose to 1.d4 (like 1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.g3 or 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 g6 3.e4 d6 4.d4 Bg7, just to name a couple) are the best.  1.d4 beats 1.e4 by a full 2% across millions of games.  Pretty strong argument AGAINST 1.e4.

They are the same. Personally e4 is better positionally but d4 has the surprise effect

1.d4 is not a surprise. It's one of the main moves!

Guys, let's do our best to not troll this forum. It has the potential to be a gem in public opinion about the differences between 1.d4, and 1. e4. For our brotheren starting out in chess this is a very hot topic.

My computer screen laughed so hard I had to google-translate it into a language it doesn't know to have a readable image.

1.d4 may be better practically, as it is very easy for White to fall asleep and lose on time in a Ruy Lopez.

e4 still,hhehhehehehe

no, d4 is much better because e4 runs into the najdorf and the sveshnikov and the st.george defense.

you know - d4 runs into benko gambit, nimzo indian, QGD, QID, Benoni ?!

yeah well i dont have to deal with the QID ever since i play 3 Nc3. also the sveshnikov and najdorf defenses are much more complex the d4 openings you listed.

d4 is better than e4 because patzers like blaming their openings for their failures. Later on, when they switch to d4 and still lose, come to the conclusion that 1.Nh3 is the best first move by far.

LMFAO

d4 gives white a clear advantage (which does not imply that it is very large) meaning there is less counterplay for black. e4 gives perhaps a bigger advantage but there are so many factors that favor black which overshadows it.

Playing 1.d4 gives white a forced checkmate in 187. Playing 1.e4 only allows white to do it in 188.3
