why do 1300 play that opening? they don't know theory past move 3/4

Because it's a fun and aggressive opening.

Also you don't know what other people know. Most people that level learn until about move 5-10 (the tabiya positions) and then try to figure it out from there. Figuring it out is part of the fun.

I've had some success with it.  Check this out.

I win with the Sicilian so assume what you will.

e5 is too mainstream, the French and Caro-Kann don’t suit my taste nor personality.

Why shouldnt they play it? They dont know past 3-4 moves in Sicillian maybe, but they also don't know that much further in open game.

Honestly, I don't play the Sicillian at almost 1500 level because Im scared of the smith morra gambit

My main against Sicillian is the faithful Morra. If I was on the receiving side, I would simply transpose it into an Alapin.

Sometimes you just gotta play it to learn. If your opponent outplays you, take the L, analyse the game and see what you could've done better.

This video is very helpful.

I rarely run into the Smith-Morra, buts it’s a comfortable game for black when you have a plan and can stay on tempo.

I play the Wing Attack, the games pretty much plays themselves out because the strategies are straight forward:

I think different ppl learn things differently…

You shouldn’t be afraid to play period. 1200, 1500, 1800 and 2000, play your game no differently:

1800: https://www.chess.com/game/live/19074986763

What theory? It’s just blunders and tactics.

a famous rhetoric question in the local army: why do dogs lick their balls?

I don't think beginners should play the Sicilian,or any half-open defense;I think it's more productive to play 1...e5 to 1.e4. That being said,if playing the Sicilian is rewarding for a player, then good for them. The best chess opening is the one that you find most fun to play.

The first game just breaks my soul, Qxd4? 🤢

Opponent in second game misses the most blatant Nd5 ever. Why play Morra if you don't know the most famous sacrifices? Damn. You scared him good 😆

I find Sicilian a good opening because perhaps I can simultaneously develop my Queenside pieces while my Kingside pieces are defending each other and attempting to gain tempo out of white
