Why do I find this opening so annoying as Black?

Tonight I lost a series of games based on this opening and slight variations of it. I failed to crack it today. I finally switched to different first moves than e5 and on my second attempt I won.

What is this opening called? What are the best responses as black?

Of course I've seen this opening before and thought I had some decent tools to counteract it. Tonight my opponent had my number so I want to strengthen my arsenal on this one.

Thanks for any and all info.

i dont know much about this opening but my instincts tell me 2...d6 is a weak move. 2...Nc6is what i would go with.

It's a failed attempt at a scholar's mate.

this is definitly the terrorist attack. the idea is that the queen movement will get you to move g6?? followed by the hard blow of Qxe5+, forking your king and rook. the game can progress quite difficulty for black if he can not escape after taking on h8

play nf6 a move earlier

i prefer the gambit line for black it goes e4 e5 qh5 nf6 qxe5 + be7 where black is clearly better because he has got lots of development and the white queen looks silly in the middle of the board being chased around with simple moves like nc6

Also, as far as why you find it annoying, you should consider the benefits to this opening from your opponents view.  In my opinion, it leads to a game that gives black a slight advantage, forcing white to retreat or fight to hold a position that does not really get him anywhere.  The good thing about this opening, however, is psychological.  Because Black must be careful to make just the right move (being in danger of checkmate), and black must play what appears to be a defensive game from the start, it is easy for black to get stressed out and/or anxious.  It's sort of like swinging randomly and wildly at someone in a fight; it may not be the best attack from an objective sense, but there's a chance to overwhelm and intimidate your opponent.

Basically, I'm saying that I play against this opening much better as long as I make sure to stay calm and don't get to desparate to push him away.  Try to think, "What would mess me up the most if I was playing this opening against someone?"

2. Qh5 is a wasted move. Do you always bring your queen out that early?

i respond 2.Qe7 as black. it stops everything and you can procced with your development as usual without weakening your knig side! the only thing you must make sure of is that you dont pin you queen... easily avoidable.

Here's how it usually goes down for me...

2. ... Nf6, does gain a tempo with 3... Qe7, but I'm not sure it is enough for the pawn.

However Nc6 can't be bad there, projecting Nf6 then d5.

Don't play this. Instead, just go for the setup (mentioned above) where black plays Nc6, g6, Bg7. I would think that the g8 knight is well placed on e7 but it might be worth a look in chess explorer?

Sure enough, the most popular line goes

e4 e5 Qh5 Nc6 Bc4 g6 Qf3 Nf6 d3 Bg7. Black scores very well in this line. In the gambit line mentioned above, after e4 e5 Qh5 Nf6?! Qxe5+ Be7 white scores 61.5% with Nc3 (the most popular move). Other moves appear to be inferior, and black does very well in them.

I will always play nf6 and while white is trying to get through or defends his queen black developes. I welcome it

3 .. g6 is an error.   Better is 3 .. Nf6.   This attacks Black Queen forcing it to move again and gaining you a tempo.  SNIP

1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Qxf7#
