why is Sicilian often ignored by low ranking players?

sicilian is known as a theory dense opening, but it can be followed in just a simple way! sicilian starts with c5 white often avoids main line and goes for Smith morra gambit (), Bowdler attack (), or alapin () which all can be easily declined. by (against Smith morra gambit), (alapin), and preparing to kick away the bishop. if white follows the main line, play the sveshnikov ( c5 nc6 cxd4 nc3 ...) white often blunders at this point by backing the knight and facing Bb4 pin or even if white follows the main line black is going to have a good central control!

Everyone plays the bowdler because they like the Italian

As white,I play 1.e4. The most common response, in order of frequency, is 1. e5, the Sissy, and the Scandanavian. So I'd say 1,e4 c5 gets played a lot by players in the 1200-1400 ELO range.

Beginners and intermediate players don't (and shouldn't) play Sicilian cause it isn't (to them) a reasonable way to play the opening. Of course, there are always some that will listen to those wise Youtubers and waste time on studying opening lines before learning how to capture pieces and checkmate the enemy king. I've heard some of those 1000-rated players spening money on chessable courses openings-related.
