Writing down variations during longer time controls - cheating??

First of all, this isn’t exclusive to openings, but I like the posters on this section of the forum, so I’m asking the question here:

Is it “cheating” or even just “frowned upon” to write down variations when you play online games with longer time controls?

To be clear, I’ve never done it. But as I’m trying to improve my calculation, I’ve considered it once or twice.

I want to make sure I’m maintaining the integrity of the game. So whether it’s explicitly against the rules, or just considered bad form, I’d like to know.

Technically, you're only supposed to use your brain during live games, writing down variations as a memory/calculation aid wouldn't be allowed. Essentially, anything that would be disallowed in OTB tournament play is disallowed in live play online.

Got it, thanks!

Not clear to me what you mean with longer time controls. But as Martin said, it is not allowed in OTB or live chess. But is allowed in daily.
