G'Day guys,
Watermelon-Man

so i want to study the birds opening, and for that i play many games with that opening, note the lines my opponents play, and study them. In a lot of my gaes after 1 f4 my opponent played 1... e6. I have no idea what that mve does, but why do people play this? Is there any refutation of this defense? Thanks for your reply, Watermelon Man

1...e6 is one of optimal replies to Bird. Just continue with 2. e4.

Watermelon-Man

gingerninja2003

it's not as good as the normal french because what's better a pawn on f4 (which somewhat exposes the king) or a pawn on d4. especially against the french.

2 e4 gets you out of the Bird. If that's really what you want to play & feel most comfortable playing, just play 2 Nf3. Black will likely at some early point play ...d5 and/or ...c5 leading you back into familiar lines of the Bird.
