I've been living on long island for the past couple of years moved here from Brooklyn where I lived most my life. I miss the chess parks of NY. Any place out here to play chess???

Hi,

Is the chess club still happening? We are from long Island  and I would like to bring my daughter to the club.

Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
U mean marshall chess club? Yup it is. But depending on ur daughters rating, the tournaments might be unsuatible. Im 11 yr old 1861 and i still have some troubles in these tournaments, the players are rly good.

I do believe I will have to take the Misses and go to Panera this Saturday night.

Yeah I would be interested too...I live in Centereach/Ronkonkoma and have been giving some thought to trying to get out the LICC in East Meadow on Thursdays but that's a hike.  Would love for something closer in Suffolk.  Interesting if there's a meetup at Panera...

If you find anything let me know! I've looked for any chess games at the Paneras at Port Jeff Station, Selden, Lake Grove, Ronkonkoma, and Hauppauge. Not even a whisper.

Panera Bread in Lake Grove is an Adult meet up that takes place on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays. Meeting times are typically on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 pm till close and on Saturday they start as early as 2 pm! This is hit or miss, however, but you will be sure to find players there in the later afternoon into eve.

The players all have tourney experience. Most games are timed at 10 minutes or 5 minutes. The competition can get tenacious( In a fun sense, but do not bring your kids here to play.....these are all men. The local libraries offer chess programs for children and families that are the more appropriate controlled setting, should you be a parent.)

On Fridays- The Center reach public library also has a chess club that meets in the municipal room from 6-9 PM. The men here have been united for a long time and know many of the locals. It is not uncommon for you to see them from time to time tutoring a child in the game. Most of them have teaching backgrounds, but this too is primarily and adult chess club for the most part. I would not take the trip with your child expecting to find other children awaiting a game.

Lastly- I should mention the Bay Shore chess club which meets in the Bayshore Library on Thursdays as well. They tend to meet from 7 - 9 PM. This too is also an adult club however you tend to see more woman chess enthusiasts take part in the games.

In all cases -  a board and clock should be brought with you. Many a time I see several players awaiting a game for this reason which can make the visit less exciting. Your Move Chess and games can get you set up for 30 bucks. It is impertinent for the serious player that only tournament size pieces and squares be used. Some players may reject a game other wise.

Hope this is helpful to all. Note the average Rating across the board is above 1500. Good luck!

The best part of long island is speeding on interstate 495. The LIE, Where road rage ends and the thrill of driving begins.

Greetings all once again and happy 2020!

Just thought I would post this recent information regarding a new club in Port Jefferson. The club meets at the Cosmewogue Library every Tuesday from 6 PM till close. The Library is located just behind the PORT JEFFERSON CHRYSLER JEEP Dealership. A good bunch of folks meet here. Some games are timed and some are not. Competition varies and some of these players also play at the Long Island Chess club in Nassau! The environment is friendly but quiet.

This is great news.  I live in Pt  Jeff and have been looking for a place to play offline.  Hopefully, it will still be there post-covid.

Yes...whenever that will be. Also be sure to check out the meet-up at Panera bread in Lake Grove. Previous post gave the info.

When we return to "real life" there is an adult club that was meeting at the South Country Library in Bellport on Monday mornings or early afternoons, mostly made up of retirees. A good group of club players, with one or two expert players. No clocks needed.

NYCosmos

I second that!

If anyone hears anything please post.

Greetings All:

The Panero group has moved to Burger King on Route 347just down the road. Panera basically put a time frame on guests which forced the players to seek another location. Players still meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Your best bet is to show up in the eve after 6PM.

SpeedBall23

does this club still meet i would like to come down one day

The adult chess club that meets at the South Country Library plays on Wednesdays from 11 am to 1 pm. It's located on Station Road in Bellport.

For kids up to age 18, the Bellport Chess Club meets on Saturdays, three times a month, 12 noon to 2 pm, at the Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area. It's located at 471 Atlantic Avenue, Bellport, NY, 11713

The new Dunkin' Donuts on Montauk Highway has two chess sets available for customers to play on, for free. They expect you to at least buy a coffee or a donut or something, but they won't bother you at all while you play.
