We have 5 tournaments a year but that is fairly compared to other highschools

Are those 5 tournaments all part of the same season of competition where you game team points each tournament?

no they are tournaments where you can get a prize for each one, but usually the same schools attend these tournaments

Ok...understood. We are very fortunate here in central Florida where we have Polk Scholastic Chess composed of 5 tournaments...4 monthly team tournaments (October, November, December and January) .and one championship tournament in March.

Can candian highschools join US Scholastic Tournaments 

It really depends on the specifics of each tourney. You should ask each event organizer for events you might be interested in.

My school chess club had one other player and a bored teacher who never gave any advice or even played a game. He just sat marking homework (I think it was the least onerous "required extra-curricular duty" he had to suffer...) I think I went twice...
